Defined by a Desk

Maria Slaby

When I was little I always wanted a desk. As in really, really, really wanted a desk.

I can still remember going to friends’ houses and exploring their bedrooms and bee-lining it to their desks, trying them on for size, dazzled by the skinny pencil drawer and cubbies. Come to think of it, I’m not sure I can remember one friend that didn’t have a desk.

This is not a Woe Is Me–Pity Party–I Didn’t Have a Desk–rant. In fact it wasn’t until just a month or so ago that I even told my mom about my desk desires as a kid. The dumbest thing is, if I would have told her I wanted a desk, she would’ve gotten me one.

This probably explains my adult-onset desk obsession.

In fact I could write a whole post just on desks. Maybe even a book! Let’s just suffice it to say we have a LOT of desks in our house. Like double digits.

Stop, Maria. Not another word…

So as I was saying. I love desks. And beds. (Another post, ok.) That’s one psycho-babbling interview question I could actually answer. “What piece of furniture defines you, Maria?”

Desks.

They’re all about possibilities, holding an ebb and flow of chaos and order, culminating with accomplishments both physical and cerebral. And I could even argue spiritual. Yes that much.

Ok. So who really cares, right?

I have no idea, but to me this blog is exactly that. It’s my new desk. And it’s full of new shiny notebooks, stationery, pencils, pens and possibilities!

And because the internet is the coolest place on earth, bringing the possibilities of even my double-digit desk collection to the nth degree of amazing, I’m able to write a letter to you (in blog form) about anything I want, whenever I want and with the potential of a crazy gagillion penpals!

OMG! I can’t believe I never did this before!!

Can you feel my bliss?!?!

…….

That’s a little peek into my madness. My crazy. A sliver of me that keeps me ticking. It’s important to know so you get why in the world you’re reading this in the first place. Because, really, if you’ve gotten this far, I really owe you an explanation….

A Little Backstory. And I’ll try to keep it brief.

Here I am. Peering years back and forward, finally able to stand up and dust myself off and reflect on more than two decades of co-parenting with the strongest man I know.

The fact that we haven’t killed each other yet is divinely amazing. You don’t get through a couple decades of parenting kids (with me) without some cray-cray.

And I’m proud to say we’re weathering it well. We’re still cray-cray for each other in both that deep, we’ve been to hell and back way, and in that, my heart just skipped a beat way. (Kiss Kiss Mark!)

Anyway, as I reflect, and embrace the changes in me physically (yes menopause has been interesting), logistically (kids moving on), intellectually (never satiated, thank you internet) and spiritually (always striving), I feel a huge pull to share.

Not in an It’s All About Me way (oh I hope not!) but in a Let’s Just Explore This Stuff way. It seems so much more fun than me bumbling these ideas around in my head all day, all by myself.

And thanks to the internet, I can just tap out my musings wherever and whenever, and then bam! Suddenly we’re all guts hanging out, being real, sharing stories like long-lost besties. Happy, rosy and connected, we can ride the buzz of a deeper conversation than can be shared in a text, on social media or, I shudder, in a hand-written letter.

But you knew that. This is not new. Blogs have been around forever. Well not forever. You know what I mean.

I’m just finally figuring out how this could all work for me. It’s time I practice what I preach.

(Don’t get me started on what I do for a living. I promise I’ll share more about that later. Think cobbler’s kids with no shoes.)

And for another bit of irony. Back to the desks….

My desk nowadays is really my back pack. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the freedom my backpack represents. It protects and carries my most prized possession: My laptop. That’s a whole ‘nother love affair altogether! Oh my. Seriously. What am I without my laptop?!?! (And dropbox).

Strangely though, I only have one backpack.

And I’ve had the same laptop for nearly six years.

Why so many desks?

Stop. ‘Nother post. ‘Nother time. Calling all therapists. And psychics. You got some ‘splainin’ to do. . . .

So with that digression, and circular logic, I welcome you to my blog.

I have no idea where this will lead or what I’ll write about next, but know whatever it is will be powered by a passion to explore, share, learn and connect.

Do you have any unusual collections around your house that make your family roll their eyes? Let me know in the comments!

sPaRkLes to you!
